Trinity Ledwell-Ruiz, Period 3, September 12, 2013

Initial Design:

My initial design was changed since the egg kept breaking. The following information is from my new design.

Data:

mass of structure without egg: 43.07
Score calculation with that mass: 46.4
Number of points & grade obtained: 46.4=A
Mass of structure without egg: 220

Test #1: I leveled my design to where my head is at, and dropped it. The egg did not break. The egg came out to be perfectly fine.

Test #2: I dropped the egg from a higher height. My design and egg did not break.

Final Test: Ms. Janik did the final throw, and design came out to be successfull.

Post Lab Questions:

1) Explain your final design in 2-3 sentences. Include materials.

My final design was a Pringles can stuffed with a sponge, and within the sponge, was the egg. Those were the only three materials that I have used in my project.

2)How was your design modified from your initial hypothesis to improve your results?

My design was modified from my initial hypothesis to improve my results because I changed my design completely. My initial hypothesis was that I thought my egg was not going to break even if my egg was wrapped with sponges, and it was surrounded with cotton and it did. My first design was way too small, so when I threw my design in the air, my egg cracked since it was compacted with sponges, and cotton. The peanut butter jar was small enough. It was just way too compacted, and I noticed it since my egg kept breaking and had to change my design.

3What was the purpose of having multiple test drops of your structure?

The purpose of having multiple test drops of the structure was to see if the design that I made, came out to be successful. The whole point of the project was to protect an egg from a 20 feet drop and the egg would still be completely fine.

4) Explain why your structure did or did not make the egg break.

My egg did make the egg break because my egg was inside of a sponge. The sponge is made up of a lot of cotton, so I did a slit in the sponge, and stuffed my egg since of it. Since the egg is surrounded by nothing but cotton, when you throw my design in he air, the cotton that was inside of the sponge, protected the egg from damage that could have happened.

5) If you could change your design in any way, what would you have done differently?

If I could have changed my project in any way, I would have changed the structure. I would have had something more stronger for my egg like I would have wanted to put my egg inside of peanut butter since I seen that if you put the egg inside of peanut butter, it would not break at all. That is all I would have changed.
